Chapter 9

Memories

Another cripple declared, “There are no superior beings,

everything is chance and everything is happenstance.”

What is chance and where does the flower

come from if there is no seed?

RONRONEO (PURR)

Although the drizzle continued falling softly over Paris, the fleeting rays of the sun managed to emerge from between the clouds making the city shine. Helena entered the Tuileries Gardens and walked towards the enormous octagonal fountain that dominated the space. The trees moved with the breeze and she felt the wintery cold typical of February in the city.

When she arrived at the fountain she saw that Max had not yet appeared. The rain stopped and she sat on a bench to wait for him. The sound of the water falling in the fountain disguised the sound of the morning traffic. She thought about Max and asked herself how he would have passed the night. What she told him was only the beginning of the things that he would have to see if he really wanted to find his way out of the hole he was in. She said to herself, ‘Max has lost his openness; now he’s very skeptical, he has a very structured mind and he wants to prove everything with evidence and tests. Before, he was more intuitive and more amenable to accepting new ideas. I hope that he can open himself up to listen, since he’s accustomed to imposing his speculations. But for some reason this opportunity is being presented to him…’

Five minutes later Max arrived. In his hands he carried two cups of coffee and a bag of hot croissants. When she saw the circles under his eyes Helena knew that he hadn’t slept well. Nevertheless, Max greeted her with a smile.

“Good morning, Helena. How do you like the cold? I brought something to warm us up a bit. I remember how you liked coffee.”

Helena stood and took the coffee, feeling the warmth between her hands. In spite of his apparent kindness, she noted a distance and anxiety in him. The two walked slowly through the Grand Allée towards to Louvre Museum, eating the croissants and chatting.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about what you told me yesterday, Helena. Look, I feel more at ease about Isabel and her death, but I’m not in agreement with everything you said. It’s just that you talk to me about things that can’t be proven.” He stopped, deliberating. Helena waited silently, attentive to what he was going to say. Knowing him, she knew that his first reaction would be to argue about what she had told him yesterday. Max continued, “I believe that medicine has been a great aid in order to be able to avoid suffering. However, you say that sometimes it’s necessary to suffer. Well, if I accept that part I’d have to ask you how it’s possible to know if it’s necessary or not. Yesterday it shocked me how that boy Diego arrived at his decision, even though it’s obvious that it still affects him. He seems very young to have that kind of confidence.
